Along with the opening two minutes of a speech, the final part of a speech, known as a ‘closer’ is equally important. Research shows most people remember the closing remarks most.
Nick Morgan in his book ‘Working the Room’ believes ‘the only reason to give a speech is to change the world’.
He’s right as the essence of speech making is to move people to action.
So how can you have a closer that moves people to action?
- Don’t summarise. Instead get the audience to do something.
- Something you want them to do as a result of hearing your speech.
- Give the audience a ‘call to action’.
- If this is unfamiliar territory for you, model your closer on those that have worked in the past and become part of history.
- Don’t try and mimic others. Work out what techniques you find effective.
- Avoid finishing with a Q & A session because you have no control over the questions and there is a serious risk of it being hijacked or just petering out.
To help you get started here are my Top 5 ‘Closers’ from US history and Culture that Inspire Others To Take Action.
1. JOHN F. KENNEDY, INAUGURAL ADDRESS.
“And so, my fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country.”
2. MARTIN LUTHER KING, Jr. “I HAVE A DREAM” SPEECH.
“Free at last, free at last, thank God Almighty, we are free at last.”
3. RICHARD NIXON, “AU REVOIR” SPEECH
“But the greatness comes and you are really tested, when you take some knocks, some disappointments, when sadness comes, because only if you have been in the deepest valley can you ever know how magnificent it is to be on the highest mountain.”
4. EDWARD KENNEDY, WITHDRAWAL SPEECH AT THE DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION.
“For me, a few hours ago, this campaign came to an end. For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives and the dream shall never die.”
5. HOPPERS SPEECH TO HIS GRASSHOPPER SWARM IN THE DISNEY/PIXAR CLASSIC “A BUG’S LIFE”.
“You let one ant stand up to us - then they all might stand up. Those puny little ants outnumber us a 100 to one. And if they ever figure that out, they’re goes our way of life. It’s not about food, it’s about keeping those ants in line. That’s why we’re going back - does anyone want to stay? Let’s ride.”

Writer’s forums are bustling with debate over whether or not a writer should send something out for free. Some people feel that writing for free weakens the market for other writers, while some people feel that writing is an art that should be shared freely.
I personally chose freelance writing as an actual calling. I aim to do something I absolutely love to do while getting paid for it. I spend a lot of money on research materials, computer software, books, ink, and other writing tools. I also spend a good deal of time simply researching my markets. I would hope to get a decent compensation, especially when what I am writing might help some other chap make money.
With that said, I do write for free at times. I’m doing it right now. This article that you are reading isn’t going to be added as a clip to any résumé of mine, but it is a simple promotional tool. It promotes me as a writer. Invariably, there are several good reasons to write for free, though there are a couple of good ones not to write for free. Below is a small list of reasons to do so.
1. In some cases, writing an article in a newly established (or small but reputable) literary journal or ezine can help a new writer develop a repertoire. Small presses usually struggle to stay afoot and cannot afford to pay their contributors any royalties. One great thing about publishing for free with some of these presses is that they may actually become larger. If that happens, well, you’ve already established yourself as a writer with them and you’ve got the clips to prove it.
2. If a writer has a book or a website to promote, he or she can write (for free, of course) articles in ezines. People who read the articles can then click on a link to the author’s book or web page.
3. There are times when a message is bigger than the act of writing. For example, if a writer is looking to spread the word on a charitable organization, or has figured out a way to create world peace, well then, it might be best to shoot the article out to hundreds of places on the Net for absolutely free.
Okay, so there are some pretty decent reasons to send your work off for free, but here are some things you should keep in mind before writing for an empty hand.
1. Many websites make money from the content on their sites. They will place adds on their sites that automatically match certain keywords in the articles that are submitted. So, you don’t get paid for your hard work, but the Webmaster is getting paid. Think about the sites where you are submitting your work and weigh the benefits.
2. Think about the copyright, the copyright, and don’t forget to think about the copyright. (Redundancy intended). Will you retain the rights to your work? Can that ‘publisher’ turn around and sell your article for a profit? Any time you have something on the Internet, whether you get paid for it or not, it is considered published. Many paying entities would like to have first rights to an article or a literary piece. ‘First rights’ means that the article was never before published. Be very careful when posting your articles on the Net for free, especially if you can make a good penny from them from a reputable publisher.
3. Beware of vanity vultures. The Internet is swarming with people trying to make money from writers. If a ‘publishing company’ offers you the chance to have your work published ‘for free’ (free to you, and of course, free to them), be cautious. Poetry peddlers are infamous for such a lure. Poets are offered a chance to have their works published in special leather bound anthologies, but never get paid for their work. Even worse, these poets are told that they will have to pay for the anthology! Always check the company before floating your work into their lairs. You should be able to see a sample of the type of work that they publish.
In summary, it is really easy to get something you wrote somewhere. The question you must ask is whether you want to be paid for it, whether you will really gain any notoriety from it, and whether it will satisfy any promotional needs of yours.
Have fun writing.

Make sure that malware doesn’t take over your computer. Most computers are not protected and are at risk everyday. Issues happen when people go online and are attacked by malware and have no idea how to protect themselves. However the Internet should be filtered there’s absolutely no doubt.

The average pedophile will victimize between 50-150 children before he comes to the attention of law enforcement. A large and growing number of predators have gravitated towards the internet, reasoning that browsing the personal profiles children themselves post on instant message services and anonymously lurking in chat rooms is less risky and more effective than hanging around playgrounds and schoolyards. The number of predators using the internet to groom children for future exploitation rises every month. Winclear is the only software which is capable of removing keylogger programs. If you ever click the “save password” button below a login form you are installing a cookie on your computer that will automatically insert your password into the fields. Winclear has been the industry leader in fighting keyloggers for the last 8 years.

Be careful when you write.
Words you use, sentences you phrase will reveal what you are.
We come across so many examples daily.
There are sales letters that I do not even bother to go beyond first few lines.
There are others which keep me hooked till the end.
What differentiates one from another?
-Use of the right language.
What is right language you might ask?
-It depends upon the occasion, I would say.
When you interact in the real world your facial gestures and voice modulation can to some extent compensate for the wrong selection of words though that too becomes difficult sometimes.
But internet is a faceless world.
Here your sole medium of communication is the written word. It is in your emails. It is in your sales letters. It is in your website, advertisements and not to speak of many other things.
So when you use wrong word on the net you will not be pardoned. Online business thrives on the written sentences. Whether they take a form of sales letter, a promotional article or communication with your potential customers, your writing will influence your business.
What you write forms a personality of its own. In language each word has a unique identity, a unique meaning. Further amalgamation of words into sentences forms a structure that may vary in the shape depending upon words chosen and how well they have been knit.
This whole process will differentiate a well built writing from a poor one.
This whole process will eventually distinguish an impact from a thud.
Yes! You should choose your words carefully and knit them diligently.
This is an ongoing process and can not be learnt in a day. But it can be learnt for sure.
First and foremost is writing with passion. Whether it is a sales letter or an email, when you get involved in the work you produce a better copy. Your mind works on a different level and your vocabulary is used to maximum.
Second is constant reading and increasing your vocabulary. Whenever you read something whether it is newspaper or a novel or anything you do come across new words. Note them down and look for exact meaning. Do not work by approximation to complete the reading. It might seem boring initially but it will end up forming a good habit and enrich your vocabulary.
Study the good works of successful people. Learn how they produce powerful statement using the same set of words. Note how everybody has a unique style that they can be identified with.
You too should develop your own style. No! Not a copy of someone but your own. Write as you comfortably write. Don’t imitate somebody in want of style. As you write naturally your style will take a shape.
Last but not the least, keep your grammar and spellings correct. Wrong grammar and spelling mistakes leave a very bad impression. It does not matter if your reader has a bad grammar but you will be judged by absolute standards.
Typos and grammatical mistakes are absolutely intolerable. Avoid them as you would avoid an allergic substance.
Follow these and you will have better hold on the language and better results in your business.
Your words are your weapon in this marketing arena. Make it sure that you possess the best ones and you are an expert user.

While delivering a speech, it is clear that we will be judged and perceived in a certain way based on our ideas, words, and body language. Taking a risk and really thinking out of the box can be quite rewarding and at the same time, it can be a disaster. The famous quote “there is a thin line between genius and insanity” probably stems from this. In order to remain on the genius side it is important to recognize our boundaries.
When I was in University, I had a friend named Ricardo, who was an exchange student from Mexico. One day Ricardo had to present his case study on Giant Tiger, a large Canadian retailer, similar to Zellers. In my four years of University, I had never seen such a lively, compelling, entertaining, crazy, off the wall and extremely humorous presentation. It definitely was not your typical dry business student presentation. It was so different that halfway through his presentation; he stepped out of the classroom for a couple of minutes and returned wearing a tiger costume. Sure it was strange, different, gutsy, and slightly ridiculous; however, for the first time all semester, every single student in the room was paying attention to the presentation. The audience laughed the whole way through and once it was over, every single student applauded with great enthusiasm.
Now, let me put more emphasis on the last sentence: every single STUDENT applauded. There was one critical person that was not amused by Ricardo’s show - the teacher. In her eyes, Ricardo acted completely unprofessionally and she believed that he was mocking the case study. She was definitely not happy, and as a result, she gave Ricardo a failing grade.
Now, let me introduce another story to prove my point. This is a story I heard from a doctor in New York City. He explained to me that while he was a resident at a reputable University, one of the most popular teachers was fired for making inappropriate comments during his lectures. The news was shocking to all the students because this was the kind of professor that would apparently put his heart and soul into his profession; he was the kind of professor you would be lucky to get once in a lifetime. The students could not believe that the most recognized and remarkable teacher from the faculty had been let go for making too many jokes in his classroom. He was dedicated and committed to transferring his knowledge in a pleasurable way and the students loved him because he had the capability of mixing humour with technical issues. I guess he told one too many jokes because the faculty committee decided to let him go simply because they felt he wasn’t adequately representing the university.
Both of these stories are quite similar, and unfortunately, they both end in an unpleasant way. The positive thing is that we can learn a lot from their mistakes. Ultimately, they both failed to identify their hidden audience. Each presenter did not consider the effect of their eccentricities. There is nothing wrong with being different; however we must be aware of the boundaries we are about to cross. Remember this when the time comes for you to prepare your next talk and you feel like adding a spark of creativity. I strongly recommend that you remember to consider everyone who will be touched by your presentation. The result will be that you will not cross that invisible line which exists between genius and insanity.
