    7 Tips For Successful Travel

We all travel a lot more now than our ancestors did. We travel all over the world and only think of the jet lag, and not the vast distances we cover. Our world has become smaller and more reachable. And this is a good thing. It helps us to understand different cultures, different people with different ways of living and working. But there are a few essentials you should always check before setting off.

    1. It may seem obvious, but many people don’t bother to find out the most basic things about the country they will travel to. You should do this to avoid surprise or disappointment.

    2. Check on the kind of weather you will find where you are going. If you live in Florida and travel to northern Greenland, you will be in for a shock unless you know that much colder weather is normal there.

    3. Be sure that the medical and general insurance coverage you have (you do have, don’t you?) is adequate for your destination.

    4. Do you have all the paperwork and documentation required for your trip? If not, get it!

    5. Are there any diseases you will need immunization against where you are going? Check and find out before getting exposed.

    6. If you plan on driving in the place you intend to travel to, check that you have an acceptable licence. You may need an international driving licence, for example. And are you familiar with the local driving laws where you are going? If not, become familiar, fast.

    7. Finally, the most obvious one of all: is your passport up to date? And if not, do you have enough time to renew it before you set off? You’d be surprised, amazed even, at how many people get this one wrong.

Moving Around the Serengeti Following the Migration

Moving around the Serengeti following the migration is one of life’s great pleasures. If ever you get an opportunity don’t think twice; pack your bags and head out to East Africa. Moving around the Serengeti has its problems, there are few lodges in many areas so where to sleep. Bedding down next to the migration, to the wildebeest is not an option. There are just too many lions that follow the migration to even think about sleeping in the option.

Over a million wildebeest move annually from the southern plains of the Serengeti, where they give birth, to the Maasai Mara in the north, and back, accompanied by Zebra and other migratory mammals. Lion, cheetah, hyena, hunting dog and crocodiles make sure only the strongest and the lucky survive.

So when should you head out to Africa to witness this great event? The Serengeti can be visited any time of the year, each season, each month offering something different. Many visitors will opt to stay away during the season of the long rains from mid April to May. Altitudes in the Serengeti are higher than most of Europe; temperatures therefore vary with cool evenings from June to October.

The migration is triggered off by the rains which are notoriously unreliable, resulting in the migration not running to a timetable. The Ndutu plains; in the southern Serengeti will usually have the migration from mid December until the end of March a magical period during which the great migration takes over the plains around Ndutu to give birth to their young. The migration then moves up to the central Serengeti for the months of June and July. In these months, the safari can be combined with a balloon flight in the central Serengeti.

The typical tents in the mobile camps are spacious and comfortable with large king-size or twin beds and en-suit bathrooms. Each tent has its own spacious private verandah with a private view overlooking the Serengeti. Bathrooms are very comfortable remembering they are mobile camps; having a shower, a wash basin and an environmentally friendly toilet, using water and environmentally friendly chemicals.

Fantastic meals are always served in the dining tent or if you prefer meals are served at your own veranda or in the bush under the Serengeti stars. Luxury and comfort are the emphasis in these camps. They might be a little more expensive than the larger lodges but do offer a more intimate African experience. The experience, the comfort, the whole experience is well worth the expense.

A Near Perfect Example of English Rural Charm

Early evening in late summer, and I drove with two companions to the village of Keyston in Northamptonshire, to The Pheasant restaurant which has one Michelin star. We parked behind the restaurant, and initially I was reluctant to get out of the air-conditioned car. In an adjoining field thirty or so cows were settling down for the evening.

Keyston was a lovely village, a near perfect example of English rural charm. There were no road signs, or markings or any of the usual street clutter. Big dignified stone houses lined the wide lanes, interspersed by mature trees. In the centre of the village there was what appeared to be a working farm. One could see that the original rustic peasant identity of the village had been exaggerated and over-preserved and gentrified into a pastiche. The effect reminded me of accounts of Marie-Antoinette playing at being a milk-maid at the fake Viennese hameau in the grounds of Versailles.

The Pheasant was a long, low, thatched building, with white-washed walls, facing one side of the village green. In front of the main entrance were a great many half-barrels, filled with soil and planted with colourful flowers. Inside there was a big bar with a low beamed roof, 19th-century hunting rifles on the wall. A stuffed fox, vixen and cubs looked out from a glass case. Around the bar were small round tables and a great many “Windsor” chairs that looked authentic.

The restaurant itself was to the right of the bar, a big room with cream paintwork and walls the colour of biscuit. The main feature was a huge plough painted black. Other agricultural implements, also painted black, were on display. On the walls were coloured 19th-century prints of prize cows, matching the real cows outside. Colourful displays of flowers were everywhere - red, blue, orange, yellow. In an understated way, the room was quite opulent.

Our table was in a corner and my chair was by an open window. In a window box just outside were more of the colourful flowers, and as the light faded the colours became more intense. Veuve Clicquot champagne to drink. Crab with some salad. Duck in a truffle sauce (it was horrible, fatty and tasteless). Served as a separate order, and regarded as a great delicacy, were “fat chips” (an unusual dish to find in a restaurant where the cuisine is French auberge). Chocolate tart and pistachio ice cream. Very good coffee.

Outside dusk had fallen, but it was still fairly light. The heat was almost unbearable. To get some fresh air we walked through the village and up to the church, the spire (a broach spire as is traditional in Northamptonshire) looming above us. The Barnack stone of the building gleamed in the last vestiges of the light. My two companions were taking the right-hand path until I told them bluntly: “I am NOT going to walk anti-clockwise round a church at this time of night!”

We sat on a nearby wooden bench and continued talking until the light had completely gone. I returned to my car, and drove home cross-country along narrow lanes, rolling cornfields on either side. A great deal of wildlife was abroad in the summer night including two wild (or feral) cats, one of them leaping away from the road in an incredible arc. Later I came across a baby deer, standing trustingly by the side of the road. Hares, puzzled by the arrival of my car in such a remote spot, bounced away into the grass.

    Monaco Grand Prix May 28

The Monaco Grand Prix ranks among the top sporting events in the world, and for good reason.

The combination of Formula One cars street racing and the influx of celebrities to the playground of Europe make a heady mix for the annual event, and is viewed as part of the social calendar for the world’s top sports stars, actors, models and businessmen.

The circuit takes in Casino Square and passes by the renowned Hotel de Paris in Monte Carlo, making it one of the most recognisable hotels in the world.

The race started in 1929, organised by Monte Carlo resident and founding president of the Automobile Club de Monaco, Anthony Noghes, and the Grand Prix has made the world’s second smallest country a destination of choice for many.

While Monaco enjoys the attention of the world’s media for one weekend every May, she also attracts many people long term to become residents due to her tax haven status, and residents enjoy a zero rated income tax.

In recent years Monaco has attracted the wealthy for another visit. The annual Monaco Yacht Show in September has the most exclusive yachts in the world moor at the harbour in Fontvieille, and the hotels in Monte Carlo and Monaco are booked full nearly a year in advance.

For both events, the Monaco Grand Prix and the Yacht Show many visitors stay in nearby Nice and travel in, and the hotels in Monaco enjoy full occupancy at premium rates.

    Monaco Real Estate

Once a European backwater, Prince Rainier turned Monaco into one of Europe’s best known locations, combining glamour with an income tax free policy that has attracted millionaires and billionaires to the principality for the last forty years.

Real estate prices reflect the prestige and tax advantages of living in Monaco. One local Monaco estate agency report that currently they have a one bedroom apartment, with no sea views, available at 880,000 Euros. And by the time closing costs are taken into account this rises to around a million Euros.

A two bedroom two bathroom apartment in Monte Carlo is available for 1,900,000 Euros.

And a five bedroom four bathroom apartment, recently featured on the BBC’s Money Programme ‘No tax please - we’re rich’, in Fontveille, the same area of Monaco where the Hotel Columbus, part owned by Grand Prix driver David Coulthard, is situated with Mediterranean views is available for ten million Euros.

With demand from clients worldwide the prices of real estate in Monaco is likely to be among the highest in the world for the forseeable future.

Commenting on the local property market, several estate agents have reported good sales for Monte Carlo real estate and for Monaco generally in the first quarter of 2006, with the top end of properties in Monaco doing particularly well compared to the same quarter last year.

And there are rumours among the owners of the hotels in Monaco and Monaco Real Estate industry that two islands could be built with bridges to connect them to Monte Carlo which would allow some 5000 new low rise properties and a hotel to be built.

If the rumours become true of more availability of properties and a new hotel in Monaco the possibility also exists of an extended or changed circuit for the Monaco Grand Prix in years to come.

Weigh your options before you book

The moment people find out I’m a travel writer the first question is always about how best to save money when flying. My answer is always the same, that the most important part of this whole picture is to compare flights before you book. Some people will think to themselves that Southwest or American has the most flights from their city to their destination, and then they go onto that company’s site to find the cheapest ticket, but this is a big mistake.

In the internet age we live in, every airline has to match prices of every other airline in order to fill their planes. So even if Southwest has 20 flights a day and another airline only has 2, chances are they will be the same price, or occasionally the other airline will actually be cheaper because they have to undercut Southwest to make sure their flights are full each day. Check a site like Kayak or Priceline instead, so you’ll be able to see all the airlines at once.

Even when you use one of the better travel sites I recommend comparing at least one other to make sure you are getting the best deal possible. I use Kayak first and then I compare to Priceline and then I’m set. You don’t want to compare Kayak to SideStep because they are co-owned and will give identical results, so use Priceline.

Travel Tips - Taking Your Camera on a Vacation With You

Don’t you like going through your vacations photos? We all take pictures when we go on a vacation. It is a great way to perpetuate the experience and remember it for years to come. However sometimes taking pictures is not smooth. Unexpected problems pop up such as running out of film, running out of battery or just forgetting the camera in the hotel. In this article we will provide a few easy to follow tips that will help you in carrying your camera and taking pictures.

The first decision when taking a camera with you on a trip is which camera to take. One of the common mistakes people do when traveling is taking a camera that does not fit their needs. For example they take a high end heavy camera just to leave it in the hotel room since it is too hard to carry with them. It is important to take the right camera for the trip. For example if you are going to be walking a lot or trekking it is better to have a lighter weight smaller camera. If you are going to be driving a lot you can take heavier equipment and more accessories. You should also match the camera to the destination and to your photography level. If your goal is to capture memories a cheap small camera is more than enough. If your goal is to take high quality photos for future enlargements a professional high resolution camera is adequate.

Carrying the camera and its accessories is much easier with the right carrying bag. Most people are tempted to buy a bag specifically designed for their camera. These bags are easier to use and have the right compartments for the various accessories but they have a big drawback: they can draw the attention of a thief who is lurking for tourists. It is better to use a normal bag such as a backpack that does not look new or like a bag that holds an expensive camera.

Digital cameras have many accessories some are optional and some are not. It is a good idea to make a checklist and use it when packing for a vacation. Make sure that you take the battery charger, the right adaptors for the power outlets in your destination, lenses, memory cards and more.

Two very important things to remember when traveling are batteries and memory. Always carry a fully charged spare battery with you. One of the worst experiences is running out of batteries just before a great photo opportunity shows up. Charge both batteries at least every night when getting back to your hotel. Even if you did not take many photos that day and you think the batteries have enough power in them it is better to make sure by fully charging them rather than to take the risk. Also remember that batteries slowly lose their power even when not used so always recharge your spare battery too even if it was not used.

The equivalent of running out of film in old cameras is running out of memory in digital cameras. Make sure that you are taking enough memory cards for the whole trip. Unless you have a laptop with you to dump the photos to you will need the memory to last the whole trip. Try to guess how many photos you will take daily and then get enough memory to hold double that number. Remember that with digital cameras it is easy to take many pictures. It is better to take a few smaller capacity memory cards than one high capacity card. When a card is full you can leave it in your luggage in the hotel room. If worst happens and you lose your camera with the memory card in it you will at least have some memories in a safe place.

If you are an experienced photographer and want to take a tripod with you it is important to find the right compromise between a good tripod and carrying ease. If the tripod is too bulky and heavy you will end up leaving it in your hotel. You can also decide to carry two tripods a miniature one for when walking or trekking and a heavier one when driving around and stopping for photo opportunities.

Taking pictures when traveling is a great way to capture memories. When you get back home dump the photos to your desktop computer make backups and enjoy them for the rest of your life.
