Overvaluing Your Hand
I’m about to save a lot of people some money right here; top pair isn’t always the best hand. Did I blow your mind? Here’s another one: two pair isn’t that great, either. Boom. One more? Okay: flush draws don’t win at showdown.
Hopefully this is all way too obvious to you, but there are lots of poker players out there who overvalue their hands, and it costs a lot of money when you think that your hand is better than it is. It happens most frequently to new poker online players, but everyone gets hit wit the overvalue bug every now and then. When you’re in the middle of a dry streak, just having an Ace in your hand can feel great.
Don’t get me wrong-sometimes top pair is the best hand, and two pair can certainly be a winner, but you have to be aware of what’s going on at the poker table. Your paired King is a lot less valuable when there are four Clubs on the board and everyone is betting like crazy, and two pair may not look so good when the flop is Jack-Queen-King, so pay attention to what’s going on before you start pouring your chips into the pot.
