The Fabulous Fifties
The Fabulous Fifties
By Vicki Clark ©2005
By the time the Korean War ended, in 1953, fifty thousand Americans had returned home in coffins. With the end of the War came President Eisenhower’s promise of a bright future for the United States. It was the beginning of an economic boom unlike any in the history of the Country. For the first time since the Great Depression of 1929 America was not in crisis.
During the latter part of 1953 mass consumerism was on the rise and money was in the bank. Americans moved up to the “middle class” at the rate of one million a year and real wages were rising at an unprecedented 4.5% yearly.
It was a time of conformity when men, dressed in gray flannel suits and white shirts, went to their white-collar jobs and women kept the home fires burning in their pastel, “cookie cutter” houses of America’s new suburbia. Life centered around the stability of home and family and 97% of marriageable men and women were married, it was a couples society and they were all having children, the baby boom was in full swing..
Americans began their love affair with TV during the early part of the decade and by the mid 50s 3/4 of them owned a television set and spent 1/3 of their waking hours watching I Love Lucy, The Honeymooners, Jack Benny, Queen for A Day, What’s My Line, Ed Sullivan and American Bandstand. Consumerism flourished as television ads convinced viewers of the need to keep up with the “Jones’” by owning the latest gadgets and goods.
For Black citizens, in the midst of this new American prosperity, life remained unchanged but change was in the air. The 1954 United States Supreme Court decision in Brown v. the Board of Education was among the most significant turning points in the development of our country. It dismantled the legal basis for racial segregation in schools and other public facilities by declaring that the discriminatory nature of racial segregation … “violates the 14th amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which guarantees all citizens equal protection of the laws,”
The southern states resisted integration. On December 1, 1955 Rosa Parks, weary from an exhausting day of work as a seamstress, boarded a bus in Montgomery, Alabama. She sat in the black section at the back of the bus but when the white seats had filled she was told to give up her seat to a white man. Rosa Parks refused and in so doing became the first prominent figure of what became the Movement.
The twenty-six year old minister, Martin Luther King, Jr. led the black citizens in a non-violent boycott of the Montgomery buses. During the boycott white extremists bombed Kings home. The boycott continued for 381 days until, in 1956, the Federal Supreme ruled to desegregate the buses.
In 1957 President Eisenhower sent in the 101st Airborne to accompany the Arkansas Nine to classes at Central High in Little Rock. Three weeks earlier the black students were prevented by white students, teachers and parents from entering the school in spite of the Brown v. The Board of Education ruling.
There was a change happening in music. A sound that had its roots in black music and was referred to as “race music” was becoming popular with white teens. Early in 1951 disc jockey, Alan Freed, realized that white teenagers with money to spend were buying records of what had been considered exclusively Negro music a year earlier. By the summer of that same year the “Moondog Show” premiered from Cleavland. Disc jockey, Alan Freed, was “The Moondog” and played this new music with a “beat”. His shows were a phenomenal hit and Alan Freed is credited for naming the new music, “Rock ‘n Roll”
Sam Phillips, a Memphis recording man and enthusiast of black music immediately recognized a special quality in Elvis Presley, who had been influenced by Southern black gospel and blues. On July 5, 1954 at Sun Records Elvis recorded “I’m All Right, Mama” with “Blue Moon of Kentucky” on the flip side. Soon after, he was named “Most Up and Coming Hillbilly Artist of The Year”.
By February of 1955 Bill Haley’s version of “Shake Rattle and Roll” had sold 1 million copies, Chuck Berry’s “Maybellene” was on the charts and then came Little Richard with, “Tutti Frutti”. Rock’n Roll was born, and here to stay. Even as parents disapproved of it as “devil music” the kids couldn’t get enough.
The automobile became an American icon during the prosperity of the 50s. The Ford Thunderbird, Chevrolet sedans and Chrysler station-wagons became symbols of the new affluent American society. The nation was suddenly mobile and “Drive-in” became a part of the language and culture. Public Works began the construction of an extensive highway system like no other time in history and road trips in big-finned cars became a national past-time.
The Cold War between the world’s Super Powers, America and Russia, cast a shadow of fear over the Frivolous Fifties. The Atomic and Hydrogen bombs were created and the military performed 200 above-ground nuclear tests between 1954 and 1958. There was failure after failure in the rocket launching competition between the two countries until Russia realized success with it’s Sputnik on October 4, 1957. Americans found themselves watching the skies and learning to “duck and cover”.
By the latter part of the decade Marilyn Monroe had appeared as the first centerfold in Hugh Hefner’s Playboy magazine and Ed Sullivan had backed down by inviting Elvis to perform, two months after calling him vulgar and exclaiming that he would never appear on his television show. The youth had their own music and the Beats, with their hip new language, became the forefathers of the 60s counter-culture.
Profound economic, political, racial and social changes had taken place in a short time. Happy Days? Yes, but complex and evolving too.

Lance Armstrong, Exercise and Will - Characteristics that make a champion!
The Tour De France, arguably may be the hardest sport of all time, and Lance Armstrong probably one of the most conditioned athletes ever. But, how is it possible for a man on the door step of death to be able to overcome cancer, return and win seven races in a row? Only in the end retire on top as a winner he so right fully deserves.
How many wonder? How can any human being bounce back after such set back and compete let alone win one of the hardest sporting events possible? Why, others will ask? Why would a man want to put is mind and body through such tests? Is it a new lease on life? Is it a second chance, or is an obsession in the soul?
Many who live to compete in sporting events marvel at those who consistently rise to the occasion. But, all of us like a story. A story of triumph, especially when it has to do with human will power.
Being a fitness buff I always like to categorize what certain characteristics one may have in order to do what they do. Let’s look at a few that Lance Armstrong probably has:
1.Passion: You have to be sold out to doing what you want to accomplish. You understand at the start that you will have good days and not so good days. 2.Respect for the sport: You understand that the sport is much larger than you. You have the attitude each day that it is you chancing the sport not the sport living for you. 3.Willingness to learn: Each day will be an opportunity to learn something about you, the sport and the process. 4.Work smarter not harder attitude: It is not the one who necessarily works the hardest day in and day out. It is the one who continues to learn how to be more efficient in their craft. 5.Master the mental game first: The biggest and most challenging events, courses and obstacles are not the ones we run on but the ones we think upon. You must first win over the events in your head before you can win on the paths to victory. 6.Know when to quit: Winning has a lot to do with how you bow out as much as it does to entering your first event. Compete for the sport, not for your ego! 7.Learn from the best: Always have someone to whom you can learn more things about your sport from. 8.Surround yourself with winners: You are only as good as those around you. Develop a good support team around you. 9.Eat to Win: Practice great nutritional habits. To be at your best, you must fuel the system that will take you there. 10.When others say no, you say yes: Refuse to be normal. Be the best you can be. Never settle for less than you can give.
We all may never accomplish what Lance Armstrong has overcome; however, we all have our own journey’s to pursue. Achieving them is maybe more of a matter of will rather than what each of us are dealt with. For today you may say, how come? Tomorrow you may think how far?
Growing White Pine Trees In The Doylestown Pa. Area
Planting White Pine Trees In the Doylestown Pa. Area White pines. Whenever I think of white pines, I remember hunting when I was a kid and standing near trees that were giants. Now every pine tree I plant, I can invision those days in the deep woods and those grand trees and hope someone else will have that same enjoyment. These trees will help you too in establish a desired vision to your landscape.
Beyond their size, white pines also fill important ecological niches. They grow across broad ranges of forest and urban conditions, finding much of North America to their liking.
White Pine trees need protection from deer, disease, insects, and competing weeds and shrubs. The better your weed control the better your trees will grow. When seedlings are planted, it best to plant them with large spacings to allow more light to the plant. If these trees are planted in shade, they tend to be more open. White pines are used around new construction because they perform in a wide range of soil conditions. If you have compacted soil from new construction, we suggest smaller trees of 3-5′ height.
All people handling seedlings and small trees need to help with the life support of your plants. Seedlings are like fish out of water and need care which is often overlooked between the time the seedlings are lifted and transplanted. Improper care means higher mortality. Do not try and reinvent the wheel. You must protect seedling from moisture and temperature extremes, as well as physical damage. Seedlings are living and should be handled carefully. For a higher survival rate, treat trees carefully and plant them immediately. I like to have a backup plan for planting if the weather turns bad. I will sometimes switch from lining out the seedlings to potting them up if I realize that the soil conditions will not be right for an extended lenght of time. If planting must be delayed a few days, keep the plants in a cold, protected place with air circulation between the trees. Keep the trees out of the rain and wind. To check if the trees need water, feel the media at the roots.. If it isn’t damp, water the trees and allow the excess water to drain. In cool, damp weather, the biggest threat to these trees is from mold. Try to keep out of soil seedlings moist by either restricting water loss with a water vapor barrier or by wetting the roots at regular intervals. While handling or planting try to reduce temperature and air movement around the seedlings. Windy days can dry out seedlings so consider waiting for calmer weather. Once your soil conditions are correct OUR FREE USE PLANTERS will make planting a snap so its will be worth waiting for good planting conditions.
HOW TO PLANT
Ideal planting days are cool and cloudy with little or no wind. If possible, avoid planting on warm, windy days. The soil should be moist not wet. Care in planting is more important than speed. Make sure the roots are never allowed to become dry. Bare root seedlings should be carried in a waterproof bag or bucket with plenty of moist material packed around the roots to keep them damp. Ideally, bare root boxes should be kept refrigerated or packed in ice or snow. Don’t freeze the trees. Competition from weeds, grass, brush or other trees is very detrimental to survival and growth of seedlings. Choose areas free from this competition or clear at least a three-foot square bare spot before planting. Seedlings should not be planted under the crown of existing trees, or closer than 6 feet to existing brush. Avoid areas near walnut trees. Brush aside loose organic material such as leaves, grass, etc., from the planting spot to expose mineral soil. If organic matter gets into the planting hole, it can decompose and leave air spaces. Roots will dry out when they grow into these spaces. Open up the hole, making sure the hole is deep enough for the roots to be fully extended. If roots are curled or bunched up, the tree will not be able to take up water correctly, will often weaken and die, or may blow down later due to poor root structure. Take a tree out of your planting bag or bucket only after a hole is ready. When exposed, the fine roots can dry out in as little as 30 seconds. Seedling shoots and roots lose water to air, roots require more protecting.Unlike leaves ,they do not have stomata (closeable openings on the surface of the leaves) or any waxy coatings to help reduce water loss. If the roots apear dry they are probably dead. Now I know you are thinking,”I will place them in a buckect of water and store them there until planting”. This will not work. Submerge plants for no longer that a couple of minutes. Placing them in water cuts them off from oxygen. Remember to remove the container before planting a containerized tree. A helpful hint to all those new gardeners just starting is to remember to always plant green side up. Hold the seedling in place in the hole, making sure the roots are straight, fully extended and that the tree is neither too shallow or too deep in the hole. Fill hole, allowing soil to fall in around the roots. Tamp with hands or with your heel. Don’t crush the roots by jumping up and down around the seedling like there is a snake curled up around the seedling. It is delicate. Fill with more soil, if necessary, and tamp. Tamping is important. If soil is not firmly packed around the roots, there will be air pockets that can dry out the roots, and the seedlings may be weakly anchored. It is far easier to plant the tree strait up then have the tree leaning and have to adjust the tree later. (Addition of fertilizer and plant vitamins at the time of planting is not generally necessary.) Take your time in planting. Proper spacing will help you grow a more valuable crop. I have tried to get more production from a limited area by over planting and then thinning, but I always have had trouble in harvesting …. digging is slower and poor quality usually results for a portion of the crop. Avoid these tree planting errors:
Tangled roots Planting too shallow Planting too deep Air pockets Turned up roots (this is called J rooting) Planting trees that are not tolerant of wet soils in poorly drained areas Planting over rocks, septic tanks and leach fields, on sand mounds
CARE OF TREES FOLLOWING PLANTING Check periodically to be sure that brush, grass and other vegetation is kept under control by mowing, mulching, spraying or a combination of these treatments. Always obtain advice from a licensed pest control advisor before using chemicals. You ag extension agency may offer courses in application of chemicals. Monitoring the appearance of your trees will help you to detect signs of insects, diseases or other problems. Apperances also help sell your product. Look for foliage turning yellow, new foliage drooping or other signs of poor health. It is easier to take successful corrective action if the problem is detected early.
Over watering is a common problem in irrigated plantations. You probably won’t need to water more frequently than every 7-10 days. Give your trees a thorough, deep soak and then let the soil dry out before the next watering. This encourages the roots to grow down in search of water. Frequent, shallow watering encourages root growth near the surface and the trees are more dependent on irrigation and are less windfirm. Animals can be a major cause of damage to young trees. Porcupines, gophers, mice, rabbits, deer and cattle are the most frequent source of damage. In many states you may have to call your game commission and get their recomendations on legal methods to protect your crop. In our state, you can get help from the Pa. Game Commission to kill deer that are a threat to your seedlings or obtain a free fence to keep deer away from your seedlings. Over the years we have lost more trees to mice than any other animal. Put rat baits out on a regular basis. Over the years we have lost more seedlings and plants to mice than any other culprit including deer and rabbitts combined. Symptoms Of Crohn’s Disease - How To Tell If Someone May Have It
Crohn’s Disease is sometimes difficult to identify, as the symptoms mimic many other gastrointestinal disorders. However, once you recognize an inflammatory bowel disease, specific testing can be completed to determine if Crohn’s is an issue.
The primary symptom associated with Crohn’s Disease is diarrhea. The inflammation of the intestines experienced as a result of the disorder causes excessive amounts of salt and water to be produced that the body can not reabsorb. The body, in turn, attempts to dispose of the excess fluid causing diarrhea. Intestinal contractions also contribute to this process. The severity of diarrhea will vary by individual, from mildly loose occurring slightly more frequently to extremely watery occurring multiple times a day.
Another sign of Crohn’s is bleeding of the intestines, typically seen in the stool of the sufferer. This is caused by the swelling and inflammation of the intestinal wall, which becomes damaged as waste passes through the body. Depending on the severity, this can be of major concern, causing anemia and other complications. Ranging in color from bright red to darker shades, blood in one’s stool should cause concern.
Abdominal pain and cramping are also common with Crohn’s Disease, as inflammation worsens. The swelling itself can be painful; however, the passage of waste through inflamed channels causes more discomfort. The longer inflammation lasts, the walls of the intestinal tract become thick with scar tissue, which worsens that matter.
Crohn’s sufferers also sometimes endure ulcers and sores as a result of the disease. Also caused as a result of inflammation, the intestines can develop abrasions that enlarge into ulcers. This correlates with abdominal pain and cramping as well. However, it can also lead to infection and other complications.
People that suffer from this disease are sometimes affected in unlikely areas of their life as well. When someone experiences digestive problems, they often lose their appetite and desire to consume food. This coupled with absorption problems, due to inflammation, may lead to malnutrition and weight loss.
Severe cases of Crohn’s Disease also exhibit fever, fatigue, and other issues that do not relate to the intestines, such as arthritis or liver disorders. However, the intensity of symptoms experienced will vary greatly from person to person. While some will have severe side effects, others may have very few. Because this disease is a chronic disorder, symptoms may also disappear for extended periods of time, only to return unexpectedly.
10 Simple Things To Make Yourself A HARD TARGET
Recent events have shocked the world and left us feeling exposed and vulnerable. However, we can implement some simple techniques in our daily lives to make ourselves a “Hard Target” for terrorists (and criminals).
Terrorists = Criminals.
These easy steps will frustrate terrorists/criminals and make them seek other prey:
*** Keep a Low Profile ***
- Your dress, conduct and mannerisms should not attract attention.
- Make an effort to blend into the local environment. This is especially true when traveling.
- Avoid publicity and don’t go out in large groups.
- Stay away from civil disturbances and demonstrations.
*** Be Unpredictable ***
- Vary your route to and from work and the time you leave and return home.
- Vary the way you dress.
- Don’t exercise at the same time and place every day, never alone, on deserted streets, or country roads.
- Let people close to you know where you are going, what you’ll be doing, and when you should be back.
*** Be Alert ***
- Watch for anything/anyone suspicious or out of place. This includes vehicles, delivery vans, etc. parked in your neighborhood.
- Don’t give personal information over the telephone, via email, chat rooms, on your website, etc. Don’t just throw away periodicals, billing statements, etc. that contain your name, address, account numbers, etc. - shred/destroy the address label or page where such information appears.
- If you think you are being followed, go to a pre- selected secure area (local police station, well lighted public place, etc.).
- Immediately report the incident to the local law enforcement agencies, or your local Embassy (if overseas). Try to note the make/model, color, license plate, driver & passengers, of the suspect vehicle (if you have a cell phone, you can be giving authorities a description while you are enroute to your pre-selected secure area).
This may be a smack of paranoia but those of us that have experience in law enforcement, physical security, anti- terrorism, etc. know that terrorists & criminals often seek out easier “soft targets” rather than the difficult “hard targets”.
By implementing the above techniques and the 130+ other methods in my E-book “How To Make Yourself A HARD TARGET For Terrorists”, you will significantly enhance you, your loved ones’ and friends’ safety.

Alcoholism Stages - 3 Stages Of Alcoholism You Should Know
Alcoholism stages can be categorized into three stages of alcoholism - early stage, middle stage and end stage alcoholism or late stage alcoholism. Alcoholism stages generally take years to develop. Alcoholism is a disease where alcoholic beverage consumption is at a level that interferes with physical or mental health, and negatively impacts social, family or occupational responsibilities.
Consuming no more than one or two drinks per day for healthy men and a drink a day for healthy non-pregnant women are generally considered acceptable alcohol consumption without health risks. However, as the amount or frequency of drinking increases, the earliest of the alcoholism stages can develop as a result.
Early Stages of Alcoholism
In the early alcoholism stages, a person begins to depend on alcohol to affect their mood. They drink for relief from problems, and they begin thinking more and more about alcohol. The person and others around them may not recognize that they are in the earliest of the stages of alcoholism. A gradual increase in tolerance happens, meaning, it takes increasing amounts of alcohol to achieve the desired mood-altering effects. Often, the person can consume large amounts of alcohol without appearing impaired. At the early alcoholism stages, the body has adapted to increasing amounts of alcohol. In fact, how a person functions will likely be improved with drinking as blood alcohol levels rise. For example, they can think and talk normally or walk a straight line with no problem. However, with continued alcohol consumption over time, the body begins to lose its ability to deal with high alcohol levels. As this occurs, when the alcoholic stops drinking and their blood alcohol level decreases, their thinking, talking or walking functions deteriorate, and they are moving into the next of the stages of alcoholism. Middle Alcoholism Stages
The need and desire to drink gradually becomes more intense. Drinking larger amounts and more often happens as well as drinking earlier in the day. The alcoholic is losing control over drinking, and the body is losing its ability to process alcohol like it did in the early stages of alcoholism. Their tolerance decreases as they become intoxicated more easily. Withdrawal symptoms begin to become more severe if alcohol is reduced. The person may now secretly recognize there is a drinking problem, and others may begin to notice as well. Unfortunately, the alcoholic no longer can judge how much alcohol their body can handle. Typically, the drinker denies to themselves and others that alcohol is a problem so they won’t have to deal with their inner turmoil. Hangovers, blackouts and stomach problems can now be physical symptoms that occur on a regular basis.
End Stage Alcoholism
As alcoholism progresses, the alcoholic has become obsessed with drinking to the exclusion of nearly everything else. Everyone can tell there’s a major problem. During the late alcoholism stages, the mental and physical health of the alcoholic are seriously deteriorating. Many of the body’s organs have been damaged which lowers resistance to disease. Relationships at home or socially may have been severely damaged, and there can be mounting financial and legal problems due to the alcoholic’s powerlessness over alcohol.
Every alcoholic will suffer from malnutrition. Alcohol in large amounts interferes with the digestion process and the passage of nutrients from the intestines into the bloodstream. Liver function has been damaged, further limiting the conversion of nutrients into a usable form that the body can assimilate. The damaged cells are not receiving the needed nutrients, they cannot repair themselves and the damage continues. Nutritional deficiencies cause a host of related problems to become worse. For example, a vitamin B-1 deficiency common in alcoholics can result in loss of mental alertness and appetite, fatigue, confusion and emotional instability.
And if the alcoholic continues drinking, alcohol will cause the death of the alcoholic in one way or another. From suicide, accidents and related injuries to direct damage to the body’s organs and systems, death will likely be the final outcome of end stage alcoholism.
Are there warning signs of alcoholism? Yes! Understand the signs and symptoms that indicate that alcohol consumption is becoming or is already a problem. There are resources available in a variety of ways to help deal with alcoholism stages and the serious consequences of this disease. Copyright 2006 InfoSearch Publishing
Cyberspace Gaming Keeps Gamers off the Roads
A new generation of betters should have heard of the term “offshore sports betting” recently, though a few might not be altogether assured what that stands for exactly. An offshore gaming website inherently works outside of the territory of any single land on the other hand it could be a networked betting site that locates their host computer inside the borders of a country where online betting is not at this time proscribed. In short therefore, it’s a gambling facility in action outside the national territory of the gambler. Web based sports gambling web sites are in the main regulated via three administrations. These are named OSGA (the Offshore Gaming Association), IGC (Interactive Gaming Council) and the Fidelity Trust Gaming Association FTGA.
The Offshore Gaming Association is a self governing bureau that currently regulates the current overseas sports betting industry with a duty to present sports gamers the capacity to quickly find acclaimed internet enterprises to play betting games with. It strives to preserve consumer’s rights, also they don’t charge any affiliation charges. The OSGA is an extremely well-qualified and nonpartisan third party administration who formulate neutral viewpoints, founded around your assessments, impartial inquiry, conversations, insider prompts and additionally provides industry information.
The Interactive Gaming Council is a non-profit-making organisation. The agency has been established to allow a platform for curious people to discuss concerns also to progress collective interests in the international interactive gambling profession, in an effort to establish scrupulous not to mention reliable commercial rules and routines which aim to enhance client certainty in internet sports betting merchandise and services, and also to aid as the industry’s public policy representative not to mention the council offers an info depot.
The Interactive Gaming Council has made a distinction for advocating honesty, integrity and believability due to its scrupulous ideals, and in addition its allure for business organizations of responsible ethics. The IGC influences overseas sports gambling by advocating an original ten step code of conduct furthermore charges gaming business enterprises fees for publishing their logo. Vexed customers may also mention their grievances to the IGC.
The Fidelity Trust Gaming Association was founded in a venture to compose a benchmark to reform the transactions of internet based betting business concerns. The agency suggest that through partnering with companies of honorable reputation, they can form an alliance of the most ethical and professional cyberspace gaming businesses all over the planet.
To sum up, there are bodies that regulate the transactions practised by web based sports gaming and which should serve to ease a lot of the trepidation due to the insecurity held by cynics. Networked gambling internet sites are at present altogether dependable, due to the fact that individual data are no longer required also the compensation not to mention the odds are generally equivalent to an orthodox Vegas-type stake. These websites wipe out traveling outlay, but keep the spirit of a regular Vegas betting internet site, but today you may game in your own home.
Sensory Perceptions of Off World Life Forms
As we begin to explore other worlds in search for life or more specifically other intelligent life; presuming one could call humans intelligent, we must consider how we may communicate and what sensory perceptions these off World life forms may have?
On our Earth most species have similar sensory organic features such as; Ears to hear, eyes to see, taste buds to taste, noses to smell and nerve endings to feel. But some species on Earth use sonar and other senses that not all creatures have or enjoy the benefits from you see? So, which sensors and senses will intelligent life forms on other planets have? Well this is an interesting topic, which recently came up in an online think tank when one guest member stated;
“As far as sensory perceptions go, these could also be completely different. They will most likely have at least the same senses as ours, and perceive light in some fashion, although depending on the kind of sun their planet has they may see very differently than we do. I make this assumption because radiation from the sun, and the charge in our atmosphere is one of the key elements of evolutionary mutation.”
Perhaps and much of this sounds extremely logical indeed. But they may not have all these senses or even light for that matter. They may live in total darkness like many species at the bottom of the ocean or in deep caves on Earth. If there is no atmosphere they may not need to hear, as there would be nothing to hear anyway. Nevertheless this subject is a fascinating one and requires much more thought. So consider all this in 2006.
